Whilst the size of the Australian investment market continues to grow due in no small part to the function of Australia’s superannuation guarantee, fund managers and investors alike face significant headwinds in the form of regulation, competition, and downward pressure on fees. Certainly the years since 2008 have seen investment committees and trustees rethinking the portfolio construction argument, reconciling the need to deliver returns at lower cost, discriminating between good risks and bad risks, and reshaping the institutional investment culture. These challenges which affect and impact both the ‘buy’ and the ‘sell’ side require a reassessment of attitudes, time honoured practices and in many cases a redefinition of how fund managers approach the institutional market.
